Introducing the Honor X9b Review, the latest addition to the brand’s lineup in the Indian smartphone market. While its name may require some familiarity, its design and standout features immediately grab attention. Positioned as one of the most robust and dependable smartphones in its category, this device boasts impressive durability.

It showcases an innovative “ultra-bounce 360-degree anti-drop resistance and advanced cushioning technology,” earning the distinction of being the first device to receive a Five-Star Overall Drop Resistance certification. Alongside, the Honor X9b flaunts a cutting-edge 120Hz refresh rate 1.5k AMOLED display, a powerful 108MP primary camera, and a substantial 5,800mAh battery.

Honor X9b Performance

Beneath the surface, the Honor X9b is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, striking a balance between efficiency and performance. This chipset adeptly handles day-to-day activities such as web browsing, social media engagement, and video streaming without any hiccups. However, during our evaluation, we observed occasional slowdowns and stutters when running resource-intensive games. Despite boasting 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the device can feel sluggish at times.

In comparison, competing smartphones like the Realme 12 Pro Plus feature a more robust Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset, offering enhanced performance. The Honor X9b prioritizes durability and display quality over chipset prowess. Running on Android with Honor’s Magic UI overlay, the user interface is intuitive and provides some customization options. Nonetheless, users may encounter pre-installed bloatware applications, and the device may give off a generic Chinese smartphone vibe.

Camera

The Honor X9b features a large 108MP primary camera, along with a 5MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro unit. The phone has a 16MP camera for video calls and selfies. In locations with sufficient lighting, the image quality is acceptable, particularly when taken with the primary 108MP camera, which by default produces 12MP images. The details are substantial, but there is a slight oversaturation. The dynamic range, however, could have been improved. Although it smoothes out facial details and presents skin tones with high contrast, the primary camera can also take portraits with good edge detection.

The 5MP ultra-wide camera’s low resolution prevents it from taking clear pictures. In addition, the colors seem faded, and the frame is visibly twisted. Furthermore, its field-of-view (FoV) is only 110 degrees, which is less than most others. Last but not least, the 2MP macro sensor falls short because it is difficult to avoid obstructing light when taking pictures at only a 4 cm distance. As a result, it produces results that are hazy and impair small objects’ fine details.

In daylight, the 16MP front camera produces likable selfies, even though the skin tones may not be entirely accurate. The smartphone’s low-light performance is a little disappointing. Certain segments have smartphones that perform significantly better at night.

Price in India

The Honor X9b costs Rs. 25,999 and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There are two color options for the phone. The Sunrise Orange colorway adds some color with a vibrant orange vegan leather rear panel, while the Midnight Black colorway offers a simple polycarbonate rear panel. For review, we were sent the Midnight Black colorway.

Design

The Honor X9b has a svelte appearance and its curved sides draw attention. It is comfortable to hold because of the way the display glass on the front and the polycarbonate rear panel curve around the left and right edges. Despite weighing 185g, the phone feels surprisingly light considering its thin 7.98mm thickness. Despite having a thin polycarbonate frame, the curved edges give it a very good feel in the hand; it feels quite sturdy and has a premium finish.

Additionally, Honor states that the phone can withstand a 1.5-meter drop, meaning that the impact should not break the display glass. Honor uses a proprietary three-layered shock-absorbing cushioning material applied to the X9b’s frame, which supports the curved edge glass panel of the display, as it is not a rugged phone (with multiple seals and bumpers). Honor asserts that the phone is impact-resistant on both soft and hard surfaces, including marble. That does not, however, imply that it is resistant to breaking. Simply put, the Ultra-Bounce Anti-Drop display technology will withstand breaking for a limited amount of time.

Honor X9b Battery

Because of its sizable 5800mAh battery, the Honor X9b has a very long battery life. Before grabbing for the charger—which the company sent separately—we were able to use the phone for a solid 1.5 days. Additionally, fast charging is supported by the phone, enabling users to quickly recharge the battery when needed.

Software

MagicOS 7.2, which is based on Android 13, is the default software for the Honor X9b. Although the software is a little outdated, the company says there will be a new update soon. Three years of security updates and two years of significant software upgrades are anticipated for the device. As it stands, the software is highly customized and includes the standard suite of Google apps in addition to some proprietary ones, such as Honor’s Email app, Game Center, and Honor App Market. After the initial device setup, you can remove a few third-party apps if you find them to be useless.
